Botox® vs. Dysport® vs. Other Neuromodulators: Which One Is Right for You?

Neuromodulators are injectable treatments that relax certain facial muscles so dynamic wrinkles are less visible. These treatments are used on areas of the face with a lot of motion, such as the brows and around the eyes.

Botox is the most well-known neuromodulator and is a good option for many patients, but it is not the only choice available today. At San Diego Aesthetics & Med Spa, we can help you learn more about how each of these options differs from the others and what factors may influence the selection of the right treatment for you.

Botox, Dysport and Other Neuromodulators

Botox

Botox uses onabotulinumtoxinA to temporarily relax the muscles that create expression lines. It has been used cosmetically since 2002 and was used before this for various medical applications. The longstanding history is often one of the reasons that patients request this product, and the results from Botox are consistent and predictable. It can also be a good reference point when talking about other similar products and how they differ in formulation.

Dysport

Dysport is also derived from botulinum toxin type A and is very similar in its effects and applications. Its more diluted formulation and other factors cause it to spread slightly more once injected, which can make it a good option for larger areas or for those who want diffuse results. We will talk about your treatment goals and facial anatomy, and how this can affect the onset and duration.

Other Neuromodulators

  • Xeomin®: Xeomin uses a purified formulation without added proteins and may be considered for patients who have developed a resistance to other products.
  • Jeuveau®: Jeuveau is approved only for aesthetic use and uses Hi-Pure™ Technology for a potent product that is fast-acting.
  • Daxxify®: Daxxify is known for a formulation that may last longer than others for certain patients.

How Long Do Neuromodulators Last?

The two products that we offer, Botox and Dysport, have comparable longevities. Both products last three to four months before wrinkles begin to return. This varies from patient to patient based on metabolism and the strength of the muscles. Results also last longer with proper skincare and sun protection.

Common Treatment Areas and Product Considerations

Forehead Lines

Forehead lines form from repeated upward eyebrow movement. These motions can cause horizontal lines that eventually remain visible even when the face is at rest. When treating this area, we consider muscle strength, brow position and how Botox and Dysport may spread as we choose the right product. Using neuromodulators in this area can help prevent lines from becoming more deeply etched into the skin.

Glabellar Lines

Glabellar lines, sometimes called frown lines, develop between the eyebrows from repeated inward and downward movement when concentrating or squinting. These muscles are strong and active, so product choice and dosing matter in this area. Both Botox and Dysport are used for this neuromodulator treatment, and selection will be based on individual circumstances.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet form at the outer corners of the eyes because of smiling and squinting. The skin here is thinner, and there are many muscles that are in constant motion around the area, so precise placement is important. Botox is FDA-approved for crow’s feet, but Dysport is also frequently used.

Neck Bands

Neck bands form as the platysma muscle contracts, often becoming more noticeable with expression or age. Neuromodulators can soften the appearance of these vertical bands. Botox was approved for this area in 2024.

Other Areas

Other areas can be treated off-label with neuromodulators, including:

  • Bunny Lines: Bunny lines appear along the sides of the nose when you scrunch or smile.
  • Lip Flip: A lip flip relaxes a muscle that pulls the upper lip inward when you speak or smile. Botox or Dysport can help the upper lip roll outward for more volume and to resolve a gummy smile.
  • Chin Dimpling: Chin dimpling, sometimes described as an orange peel texture, develops from overactivity of the mentalis muscle.

How Providers Choose the Right Neuromodulator

Facial Anatomy and Muscle Strength

Every face has unique muscle patterns that influence how lines form and how strongly they contract with expression. Larger or more active muscles may respond differently to Botox versus Dysport, particularly in areas like the forehead or between the brows. It is important to find a provider who understands these anatomical differences and takes them into account when planning injections.

Treatment Goals

Some patients prefer lighter changes while others want to see more obvious changes that appear sooner. The dosage is an important part of customizing treatments in this way, regardless of the product chosen. But sometimes certain products can be expected to work faster or to provide more subtle, natural-looking results in certain areas.

Prior Neuromodulator Experience

Previous use of neuromodulators can provide insight into which treatment may be better for you. If you have tried Botox in the past and been happy with your results, it may still be the right option for you. If you have developed a resistance to Botox and are no longer getting the results you want, your provider may recommend trying something new.

Common Myths About Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators Will Freeze Your Face

A frequent concern is that neuromodulators automatically lead to a stiff or expressionless look. However, these treatments can be injected in a way that still allows you to make all of your normal facial expressions without the visible wrinkles. The difference is in the injector that you choose. If your provider has a deeper knowledge of facial muscles and how they all interact to create wrinkles and expressions, they will be able to give you a more precise treatment and avoid a frozen look.

Higher Doses Mean Better Results

More product does not automatically translate to better outcomes. Using higher doses than necessary can increase the risk of unwanted heaviness, too much lack of motion, or an imbalance in results and expression. We often start light and add more when desired until you have the results and amount of movement that you are looking for.

Once You Start, You Can’t Stop

Neuromodulators are not a permanent solution and do not create dependency. If you decide to stop treatments, your muscle activity will gradually go back to its original state, and lines will reappear. These lines will also not be deeper than they were before.
