Ears are nearly fully grown by the age of four — so there’s no need for children to be teased or ridiculed during their early school years. Ear reduction surgery for prominent ears can be done safely at a young age or anytime thereafter. Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is designed to set back the ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of larger ears.*
The surgery leaves a faint scar camouflaged in the groove on the backside of the ear. The surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery and the patient returns home the same day of surgery. The ears will be tender and post-operative pain is controlled with oral medications. The patient’s head is wrapped with a compression bandage that will keep the ears positioned properly while healing. The patient is required to wear the garment for at least the first week. Most patients return to work or school after the garment has been removed, but patients must be careful of activities that can damage the ear area for another five weeks.*
